Another month has come to a close and it’s time for my bullet journal November flip through. I was so excited about doing a Harry Potter bullet journal monthly theme and it was awesome to get to go through and (once again) get nostalgic about all the good memories those books hold for me.
Planning it Out
Since Harry Potter is a pretty popular theme as far as bullet journals go there was so much to look through! From inspiration to so many styles, I had a lot to think about. Of course, you can take a look at my Pinterest Board of ideas for this theme here and don’t forget to follow me if you do!
I’m not that confident in my people drawing abilities so I decided to build my spreads around the animals in the series. There are certainly no shortage of those to choose from. I included both magical and non-magical creatures though I think there could be an argument for all animals in the series to have some magical aspects.
When I was planning out this month there was only one major change. I stopped doing my recruiting goals page in my bullet journal. I didn’t need it the same way as I had before so I shifted that page to a blog planning space. This is where I can now write down notes, reminders and to -dos.

Monthly Set Up
This month was much less colourful than some of the ones that I have done previously and that starts right away with my opening spread.
I used the Harry Potter font to write out November and put in my mini calendar with tasks and goals underneath. As I mentioned in the plan with me I forgot to leave room at the top of my ryder calendar so that I would be able to write in my habits so I changed them to icons. I ended up really liking that since my writing is not very neat, it definitely looks better in my opinion. Adding in the silhouettes of the Hogwarts house animals at the bottom of the page was the perfect place for them since I didn’t want to do the typical house/week I see often. I added a tiny bit of colour by outlining the animals in the house colour.
My second monthly spread is a gratitude log and my chores spread. Honestly, I might say this every time, but this chores spread keeps me so on top of my housework. When I first created it I was hoping that it would give me an incentive to do my chores and also let me know when I’ve done enough and it has. My gratitude log is also a wonderful way to make sure that I’m appreciating the wonderful things I have in my life.
Since it is a Harry Potter theme, I just had to have a page dedicated to my Hogwarts house and wizarding world stats. I drew out the Ravenclaw crest to show some house pride and added the first half week of the month here.
Weekly Spreads
Starting off my weekly spreads was Hedwig. If there was a pet from the series that I would want, Hedwig would be it. I hoped for years that she would just fly in my window with a letter from Hogwarts like she has in her beak here…but alas I’m writing instead of casting spells.
I tried my hand at creating scrolls for my daily boxes. The right page turned out pretty good but I did make a mistake on the left page. Can you see it? Mistakes aren’t that big of a deal, they happen in every journal but if you want to learn how to fix a few I have a post for that.
Something New
On my first blog planning page I added Norbert(a), Hagrid’s dragon from the first book. I’m not an excellent drawer but I had fun creating this and I love the Crayola metallic markers. They make a lot of appearances in my 2019 bullet journal set up 👀.
I took a lot of inspiration from the animals in the first Harry Potter book. This next spread is an ode to the challenges the gang faced in order to face Quarrel at the end of the Philosopher’s stone. You can see Devil’s Snare, a potion bottle and a chess piece. There is also a flying key, the Mirror of Erised, and Fluffy, another of Hagrid’s beloved pets.
For this next spread, I changed up my boxes again and added Buckbeak to the bottom corner. This was a bit simpler than the week before but it got the job done.
Here is my most “sinister” spread. Featuring a creepy sorting hat and a Thestral but I brightened it up with a quote from good old Dumbledore:
“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times. If one only remebers to turn on the light.”
I thought this was a good quote for a darker page in the theme. I was super nervous about trying to draw a thestral. Drawing Luna in with it was a debate I had with myself but I chickened out. Luna would have been a great addition but my nervousness about people drawing won this round. The thestral turned out well though!
For those of you on my mailing list, this is the spread that I forgot to create ahead of time. So when I opened my bullet journal on Monday the 26th, nothing was here. That night I made a simple box spread and added Crookshanks in the bottom corner. Another great Harry Potter quote rounded out the week. When I don’t have as much time to draw I like to do easy cartoons to add a pop without much fuss.
Summing it up
This month was fun but simple and definitely a bit less colourful than other months. I was a bit surprised when I was flipping through it myself and thought that it was very neutral. With that said I think it was still a lot of fun to draw.
I liked trying out the Old Cursive script that I used for all my titles this month. It was different than what I’ve done in the past. That, along with the darker colour scheme makes it feel a bit old world.
I added in a November Reflections page this month as well and think that it was really helpful. Getting prompted to take a look at my wins, lessons and projects to carry into December was great. It helped me feel like I was setting myself up for success. If you don’t include a page like this yourself I would highly recommend you consider it.
