Minimalist Decorating Ideas
Shapes and Boxes for your Bullet Journal Decorations
An easy upgrade from the super simple original bullet journal concept is to organize your spreads into boxes, columns, or another shape of your choice.
You don’t need anything but a pen for this. You don’t even have a ruler if you don’t want to. Just use the dots to guide you.

Line or Geometric drawings
I love geometric drawings. I did a whole month of these back in December.
These are super simple and easy to do. And they can make the perfect little accents to your spreads. I love to place them next to headers or in the bottom corners of spreads.
Drop Shadow Fonts as Bullet Journal Decorations
Adding an outline to the bottom and left side of your title fonts is another easy way to spruce up your pages and draw attention to your headings.
This adds some focus and structure to your layouts with next to no work and no extra tools.
Tools to that make it easy to decorate your bullet journal
These tools can be used in both minimalist and maximalist styles of bullet journals. The key here is that they should save you some time and make it easier to achieve the look you’re going for.
Whether they end up being minimal and extravagant will depend on how you use them and how much you use them. The colours you choose can also change the feel of your spreads.
Washi tape
If you’ve spent any time online looking at bullet journals you know that people are obsessed with washi tape.
And for good reason.
Washi tape can add some personality to any spread in seconds and it can be extremely functional as well.
Besides being just pretty, washi take can come in days of the week, check boxes, quotes, all sorts of things. I love washi tape since it can help you spend less time adding those elements yourself.
It can also serve as a great divider between sections of your journal or it can just add some colour.
Stickers
Stickers gave me LIFE in the early days of planning. Even before I had a bullet journal I loved adding stickers to my agenda and giving it some personality in a controlled way.
Much like washi tape, you can get all sorts of stickers. There are calendar stickers that show doctors appointments, soccer games, and reminders or you can get ones with quotes, fun designs or anything else.
Stickers can give your layouts some pizzazz in a fraction of the time it would take to draw it out yourself. So they are a great option if you don’t deem yourself artsy.
Stamps
Stamps are a tool of efficiency for sure.
And you know me, I love time-saving and easy ways to make processes more efficient.
Having a stamp to make a mini calendar grid or to-do list is blessed.
Find a set that has the elements that you use consistently and make your monthly planning a cinch by using a stamp.
Of course, stamps can also be used to add some more complexity to your spreads in the way of beautiful accents as well. Do whatever feels best!
Stencils
Similar to stamps, stencils can make it so easy to add beautiful lettering, perfect circles, and fun designs to your spreads.
By investing in a good stencil set you’ll make it super simple to add personality to your weeklies, monthlies and beyond.

Cut outs are an AMAZING way to decorate your bullet journal
If you’re not “artsy” you can still be crafty.
I used cutouts in both my Ballet themed setup and my Pirate one. I felt like these themes were a bit out of my capabilities so I supplemented my drawing with pictures that I loved instead.
Try using clipping things from magazines, newspapers, cards, or printing out images. These are all ways to add those special accents to your journal that really make them stand out.
A Word on Themes
Another great way to decorate your bullet journal is to choose a theme and add your decorations in a style that suits it.
I’ve written a whole post on how to choose an awesome theme complete with ideas that you can take a look through here.
Themes can be a simple way to give yourself something to work with when deciding how to decorate your bullet journal.
Experiment!
Decorating your bullet journal is meant to be fun and the more fun it is, the more you’ll use it and love it.
Go hog wild and try new ideas out. If you love something, do it again! If you don’t, do something different next time.
You don’t need a ton of supplies, expertise or even ideas in order to make your bujo beautiful. Just start with something simple and as you get a feel for your style, comfort and confidence level, add to it.
You’ll be able to make your perfect productivity tool a wonderful keepsake as well.
